Aux coolant pump no workie

My Schwaben code reader detected a inoperative aux coolant pump.
I think it died. My question is what does it do?
From what I understand, it helps coolant circulate at extended
idle. Like waiting for a train..

Not a lot of calling for extra heat at the epicenter of the heat belt.
My Mercedes’ SUV had a Aux pump that continued to run after shutdown.

I thought that was important, so replaced that one.

Any intel on the V8 X5 aux pump.
Can I live without it?

Live without it? Maybe.

Bleed air from the coolant system when changing the coolant? Nope...

My 3.0d diesel also uses the aux water pump when the aux heater is running, to circulate the coolant without the engine running - so more important in my case.

If it’s the same one as the 6 cyl and/or E39, pick up a used one…

There’s going to come a time when the junkyards are no longer full of 2001-2006 BMWs

Significant decline in the 6 months, I've noticed. Presumably because people are forced to keep theirs on the road when it's so hard to find a replacement.

Wife's didn't work for an extended period of time.

As far as I know just assists heating cores. When it's really cold out say 0°C and lower, you get virtually no heat at idle. You can put in neutral and rev to 12-1500 to get heat at a long red light.

I replaced hers after she reported no heat at red lights. But there was an extended period of time where we used the neutral option.

Glad I did the test.
I turned the key to position 2.
Turned the heat to max.
Aux pump working just fine.

Problem solved!
Thanks everyone.

Not exactly solved if code didn't go away. It may have been an intermittent fault but at least you know how to test.
