Diesel Disaster

Need some URGENT advice.

My brother in law has accidentally put unleaded petrol in his BMW 320D. It ran fine and then this morning, wouldnt start. He only realised his error this morning so by then it was too late to just syphon the tank dry as the damage has been done. He has been quoted £2k to fix this!!!!!!

Its the last model 3 series not the bangle-spangle version.

Has anyone had this happen to them. Any experience you can pass on would be appreciated!!

And I know what your'e thinking - it wasnt me it really was my brother in law (how he didnt notice as the diesel nozzles are black and the unleaded nozzles are bright green!!!)

Hey, there you go! You'll have a better chance of getting a response posting in your own thread. Unfortunately I can't help you.

Certainly older diesel engines could run on almost anything, but I don't know enough about modern ones to comment.
The diesel provides all sorts of lubrication for the pump and can be damaged by passing petrol through it. This is the expensive bit.

On a plus side, you are more likely to get away with petrol in Diesel engines than the other way round.

If it was me, I'd try the syphon first rather than part with £2000.
If it sorts the problem out then job done, if not, then you're still going to have to part with £2K.

Hope it works out.

He filled the tank.

He has just had his insurance company tell him he's covered so he is hugely relieved!!! He just has to pay the VAT and the excess.

BMW quoted £5000 + VAT. Minimum would have been £2000 if he took it to an independent dealer.

I am off to check my own policy!!

I have seen those before - really funny. You may as well have "I am an idiot" on your forehead.
