That said, alternators have never been particularly long lasting for me. New or rebuilt, I kill them often.

Sorry that you went through all this trouble but you should probably keep in mind that O'Reillys does not rebuild alternator themselves. They bought them in mass from various companies, and it's a luck of the draw if you got a good one or not. The same thing could have happened at Autozone. |

Interesting to read everyone's posts and experiences. UPDATE: Since my local Novato, CA shop (Toscalito) replaced the alternator Sept. 7th, I've been back twice! The first one they installed failed and stranded my wife downtown. Under warranty, they installed a second Bosch alt., but about a week later it was failing too and trashed my one-year-old Interstate battery, stranding my wife at the grocery store, where I drive to give her a jump. So... back again and they replaced the battery free (they now carry FVP instead of Interstate, made by AC Delco), put in a THIRD Bosch alternator, claiming supply chain problems have caused quality control issues. Now four days on, so far so good, but my confidence level is pretty much sunk to the deep end!! Every time we take the X5 out, we hold our breath it will start for the return trip home.

I think the new Bosch alternators are not good. The rebuilt Bosch is actually rebuilt by Bosch, or at least used to be, costs more money than the new but I think much better than new from China with Bosch sticker.

The pain of your experience with remans should be posted every time "My battery died" posting comes up.
As these cars age out of existence, most 5th and last owners are driven by price of the purchase and the cheapest method to keep an aging high end BMW SAV on the road. "When you are driven by price, your time and effort is valued at Zero"

I am only the second owner and am not driven by the cheapest method to keep it on the road. And the shop (Toscalito) manager is solely responsible for deciding whether to install a new or rebuilt/remanufactured Bosch alternator.
