Electrical/light question
The spare tire carrier I put on the back of my E53 comes with a tiny led that plugs into two pins on the hitch. So I plugged a 7 pole to 4 pin adapter, then plugged the two pin plug for the LED (parking light pin and ground I assume) and the LED started a slow blink. It lights up steady as it should with the headlights on, but the blinking is a problem. My guess is that this is due to the pulsed power that the car sends the lights to test the bulbs? It seems odd to me that it does this with the key in off though. I suppose I could leave it plugged in as it is likely a tiny draw, but blinking 24/7 will get old. The real fix then I guess will be to tap the right flavor of switched power from inside the car (non lighting, 12v) and run a line outside somewhere?

The real problem is that the E53 trailer lighting is not really set up for LED's...
People have said you can turn off "cold monitoring" in PA Soft (aka BMW Scanner 1.4), but it didn't work for me. I pull a race car trailer with LED lights, and I was getting the same issue you have... I recently bought Curt 57004 (7-way to 4-way) adapter which has circuity designed to fix this. I have used it and it works great. Curt 57003 is a 7-way to 7-way adapter that also solves this issue. |

Great tip, thank you. I’ll pick one up.

Oh, and I would strongly suggest that you or anyone DO NOT tap into the rear lights...backup camera, non-oem trailer wiring, etc. It will likely cause more pblms with false messages on dash, etc.

Can confirm -- this is how my car was when I bought it. It worked correctly, but whenever I plugged my trailer into the electrical connector, it would throw "CHECK REAR LIGHTS" on the dash. If you are plugging this in all the time you would get dinged with that message every time you start the car.
