P0440 & P0442 code - I could use some help/advices

All right, it's my turn to fight these codes.

First off, I have already installed new OEM gas cap and evap/purge valve.

This started as a P0440, then P0442 added to it a couple weeks ago. I am getting both codes now and they come in immediately after I clear them, as soon as I start the engine. To help me with the diagnostic, I unplugged the evap purge valve and then I got a P0443, so I believe that valve is good.

I think my next step is to get a smoke machine and start digging further.

So here is my question:

-where exactly do I hook the smoke machine? To the large pipe that connects to the purge valve?

This is for a BMW 2003 X5 E53 4.4i M52.

Thank you very much!

Bentley has this list for a leak detection.
Fuel filer cap leaking or off.
Fuel tank ventilation lines leaking at fuel tank or activated carbon canister.
Tank ventilation leaking (in engine compartment)
Fuel level sensor and fuel pump assembly cover leaking. (I would give the lock ring a quick tap.)

I made a plug that fit into the Intake elbow with a 3/8" hose barb that connects to my home-brewed smoke detector. Frankly it's been very useful in detecting vacuum leaks. I would never use one to test for leaks other than up front at the engine area only... wouldn't want to go viral as that dummy that tried a smoke tester to find a leaky gas tank...

So I thought that I had found the problem...the hose connecting to the purge valve did not seem to be "seated" properly. The plastic is brittle and the clamp is half broken

I put it back and secured it with tape. The code was gone just long enough for me to be able to pass smog but it has since came back.

I did try the smoke test prior but could not see any smoke anywhere. Now I guess I have another year to figure it out....in addition to figuring out the coolant leak and the oil leak...

Grab a coolant pressure testing kit from Harbor Freight. It works good enough to use. Use the yellow adapter. Pump to 21 PSI. It should drop no more than 1.5 PSI in two minutes and hold.
