X5 Lower Rear Tailgate Switch Problem
Hello all,
It’s been a long time since I’ve participated. I have found a few posts with this topic. But I still need help. My X5 is a 4.4i 2000. My rear upper hatch works fine. Works with key fob button, interior button, and exterior push button. The problem is with the lower tailgate button. Symptoms? No noise, no open. Work already done - replace button (no change), find and test both fuse and relay (all good), open up lower tailgate inspect and test the motor and mechanism(works), remove upper hatch mechanism for microswitch (cleaned and clicking fine). Inspected wires to relay all working. Somewhere there is not power to the tailgate button or something else. Was hoping someone. Ould help me with this electrical gremlin. |

Voltage for bottom tailgate switch comes from the same fuse F84 as for the relay.
When you open upper tailgate is the interior lighting coming on so body module recognises that it's open. (Body module will prevent bottom tailgate opening if upper is not open.) https://bmwteka.com/wds/en/e53/a6beb929

Do have software or scanner with function controls? When I had issues with my upper lid, door locks, and other stuff, the GMIII module was faulty.

Clavurion I will check to make sure the lights come on. I know the lid lights come on. I will check the other interior lighting.
X5chemist I do not have software that will find fault with the GMIII. I didn't even know that was a possibility. Very good suggestion. I will have to look in to this. Thanks guys this has been a big help. |

Do NOT get the nt-530 as I believe it has issues with finding some the modules. (Not positive) There are many scanners but not all are bidirectional allowing you to activate or manipulate things like sensors, modules, etc. Sent from my SM-A528B using Tapatalk

Clavurion I checked the interior lights and they do not come on. I do have a Carly scanner. I will have to try that first. If the interior lights do not come on does that mean the module is bad?

The interior lights on mine didn't work either. Add no rear doors unlock and hatch unlock. Plus, the BC button didn't work either. Plus a battery drain on F60. Check for voltage drop on F60. All those symptoms were fixed with a replacement GMIII. My Foxwell 520Pro helped me eliminate switches and buttons by trying bidirectional control.
