Getting back to work today on the x5. I got a test light down into the main post, and the probe light turns OFF when the key is cranked. Perhaps I just need to get in there and clean/tighten up the connections?

It is drawing the battery voltage down, which means current is flowing. If you are sure your battery isn't drained then I would blame the starter next.

Another quick update. Since I took off the gack and could actually see a bit of the starter I gave it a few solid taps. Then the starter cranked! I’m a little confused, but maybe the tapping jiggled a bad connection?

Could have jiggled electrical contact parts inside that are well worn. My experience says the problem will return. (probably when you are out of town and someone less automotive is driving it BTDT)

Well there you have it! Sure indicator that the starter is about to go belly up...
Replace that starter consider your experience a warning

It can happen that the connection comes loose so I would check all connections and grounds before condemning starter. When you say you got a test light on the main post was that on the starter or battery ?

Update. Got in there replace the starter. As soon as I hook up the B+ The starter motor starts spinning. The key is not in the ignition. I hooked up the wires nice and snug. Is this an indicator that I am touching a wire somewhere. The harness has the little wire up top and a medium wire underneath, and two red wires to the post

Update 2: pulled off the main 2 red wires off the main post. Figured I was probably touching the top R post. Put a backing nut on main post to give a little clearance. One issue solved. Able to safely hook up battery and B+.
***BUT, now turn the key and the solenoid does not engage. Just starter spinning. CRIKEY.

andrewwynn will become famous soon enoughandrewwynn will become famous soon enough

So there are two leads for control wires. Perhaps backwards? If you hooked up power lead to ground I would expect you blew a fuse.
