Advice on throttle issue
Was checking fluids and gave the easy bits of the mighty M62 motor a quick wipe down today. She was having none of it and paid me back by dying at idle after I got home from an errand later. Multiple start attempts seem normal but the car wouldn't hold idle and died immediately.
I was pretty sure I was getting pressure, and a quick check with the key at posit 2 showed 39 PSI at the rail, so on to the codes, which painted a bleak picture: ![]() The thought of a new throttle body wasn't exicting me, so I figured I would try the adaptation reset procedure that seems to work (key in position 2, accelerator full down for 30 seconds, key off). But before this I ensured the DME lead to the throttle body was secure, because as the pic below shows, I've had a broken tab on this connector for as long as I can remember. ![]() Voila, it fired up and I caught it at around 2k rpm and held it, while I read the codes again and throttle live data. All clear, and normal. She settled down to a nice idle of 700 rpm and seems happy again. I think what happed is that I knocked the plug to the throttle body a bit when I was cleaning and caused some comms problems with the DME. Not sure how it got me to my appointment and back and then died, but who knows. Alternatively, I could have an intermittently failing throttle body, but at $400 for a new BMW piece, I'm going with option one until proven otherwise! Given the above, any recommendations for fixing this plug? Assuming I can get a new one, or a good condition used one from the interweb, is it possible to re-pin them, and are the pins specific to the plug or did BMW use the same pin for all the plugs on the harnesses? That said, I could also just splice a new one in upstream otherwise. I haven't looked on realOEM to see if these plugs are even sold separately. Or I could always clean both sides well with contact cleaner and tape the plug on with some butyl tape, which is probably what I'll do until and unless I get a new plug. She could always spit in my face and it could end up being the actual throttle. Mine is 21 years old at this point. It looks like VDO or BMW are the two options on FCP, and VDO is certainly cheaper. Does anyone have experience with this specific part from VDO? On the plus side, while drilling down into my old Foxwell to see if it had a throttle specific test, or adaptation reset (didn't seem to), I finally found the tank vent valve test function. I've had the above code on and off (mostly on) for ages so I did the test and didn't hear the valve working. I messed with the plug on top of the valve and voila it began to cycle on and off. Two steps backwards, one forwards.
