X5 E53 2005 Navigation Maps issue

Currently my navigation drive in the left cargo bay is playing up.

1) I start the car and the default screen comes up on the head unit then cycles through blank screen back to default. This is with no maps disk.

2) I press the eject button once and the red light comes on constant. The screen says insert maps disk. I insert the maps disk and the players red light starts to blink and keeps blinking. The screen fires up with the correct navigation map. Blinking continues for a short while then the red light disappears and the screen goes blank.

3) I press the eject button again and the red light starts blinking and the nav map shows. I press the eject button and hold for a while and the disk is ejected.

4) I then put a maps disk in which I know causes a disk read error. Sure enough the message comes up on the screen of a read disk error. I eject that on and put in another good maps cd and the same blinking and then shortly later no display.

Wondering if anyone else has had this issue before. Sounds like my player is on the way out but maybe not?
