Replace Fuel Pump or Fuel Pump and Sender

For those of you with experience changing the fuel pump. I am getting ready to replace my fuel pump because at this point it is on borrowed time and I don't want it up and dying on me like my starter just did. It looks like I can purchase just a fuel pump which I can swap into the carrier/sending unit or I can purchase the pump and carrier as a unit. What is the better way to go? Andrew, I know you have a lot of knowledge about the fuel pump system on our x's, what do you think? TIA

I've done both. I've used OE and amazon blue light special.

I would see what FCP has for full unit. The problem with just motor swap is two issues:

1) the new pump may have different dimensions and require modification to the sender to adapt to fit.

2) the aging sender may start sending haywire signals

The issue with full swap is there's a fair chance the sender will no longer be calibrated the same so your DTE will no longer read the same. Eg. What used to be 18 miles to empty may now be 13.

I had a Bosch unit dead on arrival I've had Amazon knock off fail after 10 months but the warranty replacement lasted the rest of there life of that car.

I would prob lean toward just the pump if can get pierburg or Bosch from FCP lifetime warranty.

The Delphi assembly from RockAuto is excellent, I would say an upgrade from OE.

I agree. I put a Delphi pump unit in a couple years ago and have had zero problems with it. The calibration seems pretty good, from my un-scientific vantage point. I put about 20.5 gal into the car this week and the gauge was a needle width or so under the 1/4 full mark. Seems about right for a 24 and change gal tank. I don’t recall when the light comes on, but it wasn’t on.

I looked at FCP and they have a Bosch pump only for $198 and a Delphi pump and carrier for $310. Rockauto has the Delphi pump and carrier for $185. Pretty much makes my choice for me, especially since some of you have used them with success. And FCP says the Delphi is OEM.

Man I just compared RockAuto's prices to FCP for a laundry list I had saved in my shopping cart and it's way cheaper for the same brand of parts. Thanks for the tip - much appreciated
