X5 Christmas lights - A troubleshooting thread.

I'm starting this thread as a way to document what I am going through with my 2002 X5 3.0.

Background: I purchased an abandoned 2002 X5 for pretty cheap and was told it needed a new alternator. I changed the battery and a blown fuse and the car started up and has mostly been running fine (ABS light is on & a parasitic battery drain issue that I am troubleshooting) until...

About a month ago I was going up a very steep incline and my transmission went into fail safe mode. When I pulled the codes using OBDFusion I felt like I had won the lottery, but in reverse - screenshots attached.

In looking up the first error I found a thread indicating that this could be related to low fuel and would require a fuel filter replacement due to excess sediment in the fuel filter.

I got a fuel filter and spent some time yesterday replacing it, but I don't think that this has resolved my issues entirely. Today I fired up INPA and pulled the error messages and I have a ton of errors from a bunch of variants that I am still going through and deciphering.

Did you clear all codes and see which ones came back? Being parked for a long time doesn't help. All emissions tests start fresh. A good tune up and maintenance would probably clear most codes.

Incline plus fuel starvation more likely siphon jet not filter. Was the fuel level close to 1/4 tank?

O₂ heater error: reset them by unplugging all that have the street m error and run a few minutes key off and do a second time then reset codes plug the O₂ back in.

+1 for resetting all codes and checking again after a couple of drive cycles (if the car is driving at least).

I bet you have wiring damage from rodents while the X5 was sitting. Check the wiring harnesses and connectors related to each of those fault codes.

Pending/shadow codes can be ignored. They are signs that have not yet met the threashold for promotion to error codes.

Last time I cleared the codes (via OBD) was in October when I put in a new battery and replaced the fuse: https://www.bimmerfest.com/threads/2...p0600.1458851/

I also got the car smogged at that time and was able to drive it for a few months without issue aside from the electrical drain.

I have not cleared anything in INPA since getting the car.

Thanks for the response. I believe there was more then half a tank in the car at the time. I had just put gas in the night before when it was close to empty.

Is it safe to clear INPA codes and start from scratch to see what returns or is that bad practice?

Also I am using the INPA setup that you recommended on E46fanatics. I am seeing a few script errors. Is there anything I need to add to my INPA setup E53 friendly?
