2003 diff and transfer case oil type
Looking to change my diff and transfer case oil's. What type should i use. Also do i have to reset adaptions as this is a pre facelift. I have tried to search but it is not working. Thank you. Dave king |

No oil wear adaptation required on the non-Xdrive NV125 transfer case. Fluid type is ATF (Dex III, a little less than 1l I think). Diffs both use gear oil - Redline 75w90 is what I’ve used. Front diff is 0.7l and rear is 1.5l, so you need three 1l bottles for this job.

Then non x-drive transfer cases use ATF, if I recall correctly, and the open diffs use straight 75 90 gear oil, without any slip additive ideally. Not as common these days, but Liqui Moly makes it.
In truth I’m not sure the slip additive would matter in the older open diffs as there is nothing to slip in the diff anyway. Check on the ATF type tho….i think I used Dexteon III last time, but don’t recall. Edit: thanks Wpoll! Get a cheap pump for the diff.

DEXIII for the transfer case. They don't make it anymore. DEX VI is the same type. My old truck and X5 transfer case are now on DEX VI.
