The 4.6 is at my indy, and I gave them a call today.

Tech said he was able to get the fuel pressure gauge hooked up and he said at ignition on he only sees 23-ish psi on the gauge. At the moment it's looking like Andrew called it right on the failing fuel pump.

I'm asking for video to confirm, as the pump although not too expensive, isnt cheap either.

I can get a Pierburg pump without the float for around $170. But I remember the discussion on here of problems fitting fuel pumps to floats.

I can also get a pump/float assembly for $220. It's a Mahle, which I am thinking should be ok? I'm thinking of going this route instead to avoid the possible hassle of mating a new pump to an old float?

What do you guys think?

Jet pump / transfer pump troubleshooting

Mahle complete. I had to modify the float to install pump only but also the float wipers fail over time so it's nice to refresh those.

4.4 cars usually only prime when you "hit start" unlike 3.0 which primes at key on.

He can use a scanner to engage pump though.

In any event: good to confirm the pump is actually running continuous but also after it shuts off it should hold.

I'm stuck on brands too. One user quoted Bosch but later had issues. I'm looking at which brands are available at FCP Euro. I'll also do a complete assembly swap.

Other than pierburg I think it’s a complete crap shoot. I used generic the last one I replaced. It lasted 11 mo and replaced under warranty which lasted until we sold that car.

Andrew, the last vid they sent, engine was running and best the pump would read was less than 30psi. Really looks like the pump is a problem, considering a new OE filter/fpr assembly recently.

I was leaning towards the Mahle too. But looking online, I cant find any reference to it except ebay. None of the usual online euro part retailers have it. I'm getting suspicious that it's a rebrand. I may go with a Pierburg pump in the old float instead.

Where y'all finding the Pierburg? If it's only pressure, HELLA 358300491 or DELPHI FG1230 seem like good options.

It wasn’t a huge deal to modify the float assembly so if you can find pierburg for a reasonable price I would probably do that

Hella seemed OK, but....

I bought and installed a HELLA 358300491 last fall, and it seemed to work just fine, but the X started to stumble on sharp turns or curves, so much that I parked it in November, and for one reason or another (or a combination of several reasons, as stated here: https://xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-forums/...inspected.html), it hasn't moved since.

I have a second, generic pump, from Amazon (free to me), that I can try to see if the new Hella is faulty, a new Hengst FPR/filter, and new vacuum and fuel lines to be installed whenever I can crawl under the X, and do the work. My bad shoulder is getting better, to the point where it's usable again, and since the X will be officially 25 years old on 7-13-2026, I can get re-registered and test it on public roads again.

At this point, I don't know if the Hella pump is good or not, or somehow I botched the install, but since I re-installed it a couple of timeswith the same results, I really can't say.
