Based on the slow-mo replay and how the engine/trans separated from the E53….Looks like an 8 cylinder..

Unfortunately, I have seen it.... (two different angles - they had a camera inside too!).

I thought it was a 3.0i, based on the single-tip exhausts. But it's hard to watch, let alone study closely....

Definitely an M54 3.0i. Six runners on the intake.

I agree. Hard to watch and it looks like a 3.0. What a waste.
