Well, it's time to put my E53 to rest I'm afraid. She has a clogged catalytic convertor and at the cost of a replacement, it just doesn't seem to be a logical decision to spend the money on it.

Unless someone can give me a suggestion on a way to keep her alive another year, I think I'm just going to part out some of the nice parts on it and donate the car.

edit: durr I could not see your location on Tapatalk. Feasibly, I could fly into CLT and rent something... and yeah, cats aren't that expensive relative to your sunk costs. I'd rather see you get this thing back on the road than me gutting the interior.

Rock Auto has cats that aren't too badly priced and look close to the original style, not the cheap little ebay ones that don't last. I can't believe a plugged cat might be the end of that nice of a vehicle!

Dang OB. I just dropped $2k for a used engine with only 60k miles on it. Surely new cats aren't that much are they? I hate to see a really nice well cared for X like yours go to someone that doesn't appreciate it. If you really do get rid of it, please consider selling it to an enthusiast. If you weren't 3000 miles away and I hadn't just bought that engine I'd consider buying and putting new cats on it.

Possible alternative, given its age you could get away with hollowing out the cats or putting headers on it? CAT delete?

According to my AI search, North Carolina does not test for emissions after 20 yrs?

Install the EU2 tune and run headers. The EU2 tune will turn the check engine light off although codes can still be recorded and read. I did this to my 2005 E53 due to cat efficiency codes...MA only tests for emissions for 15 yrs.

They're not likely both clogged. So sell them to help defray the cost of the header tune.

If/when I ever get my '01 back on the road (not driven since last fall), and I find problems with my cats, I'm certainly going to try the EURO2 tune (or maybe super-cheap cats. Or whatever.

In my part of Texas, your vehicle has to be 25 years old to skip emissions, and I was looking forward for the past five years to reach that milestone. I've got a '98 GMC that doesn't need inspections, and my '04 Chevy 2500HD is getting close.

If my X5 looked as good as yours, I'd spend as much as needed to keep it running (legally or not, hahaha).

You can buy a catalytic for about $300. Search DEC brand.

Or search for a used cat with low mileage...
