OK. I gave my 2005 4.4i Non-Sport to my veteran service manager and he said the following (to the best of my memory ):
1) Rough engine during slow starts: The M62 engine that is used in the 4.4i (same as the 745) has had a history of rough idle and rough during gentle starts. They updated the engine management software for the 7-Series but the TSB say DO NOT use this update on the E53 with the same engine. He will report the issue to the engineers and will contact me if/when there is an upgrade.
2) Remaining in 4th gear around residential turns and bogging down at 1000 RPMs: He said there is considerable pressure to keep the SUV in the highest gear possible due to gas mileage pressures from the Govt. That is why the shift points are programmed the way they are. He also said he knows the ZF Tranny engineer in Montvale, NJ who writes the code and fine tunes these transmissions for customers. Yes, customers. My service manager said it's all software and he can put my shift points wherever I want them. SO, I asked him to check with the ZF Tranny guy to see if he could put together a code update that would downshift my 4.4i into 3rd around residential turns rather than trying to hold it up in 4th gear as I slow down and round the turn.
I'll keep you updated as this goes on.
