CPO '01--Evidence of an accident....

I purchased my '01 3.0 last December, it's a two-time CPO vehicle..I'm the third owner...recently found evidence that the X was involved in some sort of accident that required at least that the rear bumper be painted--I found a poor mask line underneath the rear bumper where the exhaust apron meets the painted portion. Both carfax and BMWNA claim no involvment in any accident, and the ride is a good find so far...I can't find any wording about disclosure about 'repairs made to' a CPO vehicle in the warranty....Anyone know if BMWNA is entitled to keep this info to themselves, or are they required to disclose any previous issues that the car was involved with?? Can I request a vehicle repair history?? I'd like to know....Getting the history would also let me know whether or not the X has gone through it's water pump yet....
Curious....

When I had a 2002 CPO X5 4.4i, it too had been in an accident.

The rear window was clear, although the car had Privacy Glass. It was new clear glass. Also teh trunk was somewhat misaligned if you looked closely.

I got that fixed. But the trunk always had to be shut, else it wouldn't latch.

The dealer never told me the car was hit from behind. This is my own theory due to the stuff I found.

The final interesting note was that when I went in to trade-in this X5 for a 2004 ML500, the Benz dealer had a cool machine which measured paint thickness. Turns out, aside from the stuff I listed above, the rear bumper was re-painted, as were large spots on both rear doors.

The dealer that sold me this X5 was mum about every single item I listed above. I guess they don't "have" to tell you, unless you ask.

Upon buying the 2004 ML500 CPO car from Benz, they happily provided me with a free Carfax on the spot as well as its history. Clean car - I wish BMW was like this...

I would guess that a repair history would only identify a major repairs. If your rear bumper was replaced or door dings or other minor repairs were done it may not be recorded. I always check for the bar code identifier on each door, fenders, and hood to confirm that they are all original. I suggest you could take it to a reputable body shop for a professional opinion.

CPO does not require that the vehicle be accident free. If you review the CPO inspection guidelines you will see that it only has to fall within certain tolerances that could include minor accidents.

Actually I think it goes beyond minor accidents. My home dealer has a 2003 X5 4.4i with the Sport Package for sale. It's a CPO car.

I checked it out several months ago when debating against the ML500 choice. Anyway, I was openly told that this particular car was stolen, and then recovered. When recovered, they found that it was stripped with components missing (didn't mention exact ones) and that the front suspension was "re-built". The dealer's manager apparently bought this car from an auction and restored it to life. Yet despite this, they are selling it as a rather expensive CPO 2003 car.
