BMW Replacing My Transmission

I have reported countless issues with my 04 x's transmission and after the third software upgrade and with limited improvement they have decided to replace my tranny. Has anyone had this done and if so is their any information/suggestions that you can pass on to me - should I be aware of any issues with replacing a transmission?

Do you have the 3.0 or 4.4? Is BMW replacing it with a new one or a rebuilt unit?

I have the 4.4 and they have not advised if it will be new or rebuilt. I just assumed that it would be a new transmission. Just spoke with my service advisor and he said that he would not know until they opened the box. It could be new or rebuilt, but his assumption was that it would likely be new as there are probably not that many 04 trannys available.

The most prevalent problem has been the tranny not engaging in sinc with the engine, so from a rolling stop, I accellerate and the revs go up and then the tranny slams into gear in addition to overall rough operation when gearing down - sound silly, but it seems like it gets confused and hence very frustarting to drive.

Sounds like the typical "clunk" issue. When was the last software upgrade?

I had my transmission replaced 2 years ago when it was upshifting hard. I have an 2001 X5 3.0 and the dealer told me that it was going to be a remanufactured one. I had no transmission problem since. (knocking on wood)

Thanks for your post...really good information to hear. I am hopeful that the tranny, be it rebuilt or new, solves the problems that I have experienced.

Just got my tranny replaced last month (2001 4.4i) due to my car not able to reverse! I got a re-built tranny. The stealer informed me that the tranny and work is guaranteed for an additional two years, even if it passes my CPO warranty.

So far so good, no problems. The tranny seems more responsive, but seems to get confused as to when to downshift during spirited driving. Only time will tell.
