My dealer wanted $270.00 for an oil change and a whopping $712.00 to do 60k service on my 2002 4.4i (oil filter, air filter, microcabin filter, and fuel filter along with a read/reset of all OBD II codes and service lights).

I told the dealer to take a hike and I purchased an FCX-II diagnostic tool from Peake research (www.peakeresearch.com) for about $180.00 with the appropriate cable and shipping. Very easy to use and worked like a charm, though note that the OBD II connector is under the dash by the drivers left knee instead of under the hood in earlier years as depicted in the previously referenced article.

Parts and supplies I purchased from www.bavauto.com for about $150.00 (sans fuel filter) and even with the diagnostic tool I saved a bundle over the dealer rates for just a couple hours of easy work. The fuel filter will have to wait for another nice spring weekend though. :-)

Call me an idiot, but is there any difference between an oil change and an oil service?

Actually the connector referenced in the article is not the OBD-II port. It is the BMW diagnostic port that was standard on most if not all BMW's from the 80's, 90's and early 00's. All X5's (at least those in the U.S.) have the OBD-II port under the drivers side dash area, as required by law.
