Rattling noise in center armrest

Ever since I got my '02 X5, I have noticed a rattling or jingling noise in the upper or leather-wrapped section of the armrest. If I move it up and down it sounds like a coin is rattling around - although I'm sure it's something else like a wiring harness or fastner or something to do with the phone section. How do I take it apart to check?

Err, no offence but have you tried pressing the latch to open it? The arm rest lid has a compartment inside.

Cute. Yes, it's something in the "middle section" the one with the cutout for the phone. The "bottom section" being the compartment for coins cds etc. and the top section being the leather shell.

Ok, your description as "the leather wrapped portion" threw me. There's probably a coin slipped under the tray. I think there a DIY on the home page for a phone cradle that tells you how to take it out.

Video Chef -

I had the same problem although I think I created it. I took apart the top section (phone tray) to see how I could route my iceLink cable through there. The console is prewired for the BMW phone, so it could be the wire connectors. The phone tray in the center of the upper console is removeable - it snaps in place and can be pryed loose (use a thin screwdriver with very gentle force to work it loose). There will be a hole underneath where you can see the cables. You can push the cables around with your fingers to a position where they won't rattle. I had pulled out my cables and didn't put them back properly when I closed up the console, so I had to redo it to get rid of the rattle.

Hope this helps.

Regards, Mike

Mine makes a click sound which sounds like something sticking every time I lean on the armrest (top portion). This is coming from the upper latch section of the armrest. I don't know how to fix it!!

Mine does the same thing. It's only obvious if there is no music playing. Apparently, there is just a little too much play in the mechanism.
