Gotta love those BMW fuel sending units

Here I am doing 65 on the Garden State Pkwy the other night and according to the fuel sending units, I'm out of gas!

One of the first failures on the CPO. I think it was only 2 weeks after purchase that they failed. This problem has plagued BMW for the 30 years I have been driving them!

Actually i ve had to replace my fuel sending units in my 2004 X5 recently. But have never ever had a problem in any of my other BMWs over all the year and models i have owned. But 90 percent of all the BMWs i owned were Mcars. Maybe they were not affected by this problem.

Also while im on the subject. My X5 since new has had more problems than all my BMWs put together. why is this. Do you guys think its because they are assembled in the US and not Germany. that would be my guess. I defenitely think build quality in a 5series is much better than an X5.

That's so much better than the time my 740 said I had 32 miles left... then sputtered out on a narrow road... at 10pm! Doh! Cell didn't work to call Roadside, so I hoofed it to the nearest station & bought a can (which remains in the trunk w/ a spare gallon ever since!).
"Is the tank half empty, or half full?"

The obvious lesson here is -NEVER TRUST THE GAUGE! You never know how close to failing it is at any time. I always started topping up at half empty because the BMW sending units are such junk.

Yea i wouldnt trust it at half empty either. When my sending unit went i was on the highway and it said i had a little over half a tank left. My X5 stauled out and wouldnt start. Had it towed to the dealer and i found out i was out of gas. so the real lesson is take precautions because you never know. these damn things are horrible. cant they just redesign them.

My gauge works correctly once every 5 fill ups. Once I hit 325 miles, I fill up.

Every time I fill up I reset my trip odometer. I know can go at least 350 miles on a tank, so no matter what the gas guage says as long as I'm below 350 I'm good
