Gearshift Assembly

Is it possible to change the gearshift assembly by self? If yes, how to change it? Any input will be appreciated!

I suggest that the other posters don't understand the question. Put me in that club

First, you list a 4.4, so I assume we are discussing the steptronic gearshift, not the manual. Also, I assume you mean the shifter in the console, and not the control assembly located in the transmission pan.

Do you want to change it to repair it? If so, and you have reasonable mechanical skills, then you can take it out, replace what is broken, and reinstall. Never heard of it being done. The usual problems relate only to the mechanical interlocks to the key and brake pedal, which can go out of adjustment (cable) and require resetting to restore functionality.

Do you want to change it for another type of gearshift assembly? If so, this sounds like a major project. Not sure what you want to achieve, perhaps you could explain. I haven't heard of anyone changing the gearshift assembly as part of a customization project.

Thanks for your input indeed! My x is 2001 4.4i. My problem is that it is very hard to shift the nob to D from N, I have to push the nob towards the passenger side a little bit and then I can shift the nob to D. I have had my x checked by BMWHK, they told me that I have to change the whole gearshift assembly to fix it. It will cost me about USD1,000.

I am a little bit confused that if it is real that I must change the whole gearshift assembly. Is there any way to fix the problem instead of replace it?
