Slight gas smell after filling up; lasts for a day or two then subsides...

I'm the proud new owner of a wonderful '01 3.0 X5 and I've noticed that right after filling up with gas, I smell a gas odor coming from the rear end...it's not overwhelming and I don't smell it inside the cabin but I do smell it at the rear of the vehicle like around the rear wheel wells. After a day or two of driving, the smell subsides and stays away until next fill up, then the cycle starts again. I'm not one to force feed gas so I know it's not because I overfilled. Also, there are no puddles or stains on the concrete where I park, so clearly whatever is happening isn't huge, but just enough to be able to smell it. Is this a big deal or simply a hose or something? I've also heard something about an O-ring, seeing as how the smell seems to be a function of the gas level. What do you guys think, anyone else had this issue? Like I said, this is an absolutely wonderful vehicle and I'm thrilled to be driving such a solid machine, but I just thought I'd inquire to see what you guys think of the situation. Thanks for all the help. K. Helms

There must be an issue with the filler neck. I smell absolutely nothing when filling up. Have you tried doing a fill up but stopping at 7/8 full?

My 2002 is in the shop right now for the same thing. It only happens when you top it off. But, in my case, I'd be afraid of lighting a match in my garage after topping off and then shutting the door.

To your point, no puddles, no overflow and only by the rear of the X.

But, I also have a continual issue with the SES light. the two may or may not be connected.

I'll let you know later this week as to what they found.

Yes, please do. I have not had the SES light come on ever, so whatever is happening must not be serious enough to cause a code to be thrown. But nonetheless, I do have the odor so please let me know what the dealer finds. I'll also have my tech check out the filler neck. Thanks for the help guys.
