BMW Steptronic?
I have the 05 4.4 X5, and I noticed when going into manual mode from auto, it says I am in second gear, even when I start it up. Does the X go into 1st gear in auuto mode?

i think it depends on your driving style, I can tell that sometimes I do not start in 1st gear because at 2k rpm I am at ~20 m/h w/o a shift, but when I drive hard it starts in first and holds the gear until about 3500

xx3 is on a distinguished road
Almost always starts out in 2nd gear in auto mode to save gas. Only after some spirited driving might it downshift you into 1st, or start you in first.
