Does the X5 4.6is has had any problems with engine...??

I just got one about a month or so, the car is still under factory warranty and certified. The thing is that when I start the car in the morning and the car is cold there is a large sound coming from the cam shaft, also when I go really fast I can hear a strange sound in the engine.I've heard that M3's had some problem related in the engine and a lot of m3's got the engine replaced. Im not sure if it has anything to do with.Im taking her to the dealer in 2 weeks which is the earliest they can give me an appointment.

What do you guys think? thanks

Not so sure what you mean by a "large" sound. Do you mean "loud" sound? Does the sound occur in unison with the engine firing? Does it sound like pieces of metal striking each other? Or is it some other type of sound.

But more importantly, waiting 2 weeks for an appointment is beyond ridiculous, especially if you have a possible engine issue. Are there any other dealers close by?

It sounds all the time but it increases when I press the gas, it sounds like a lot of metal going up and down like pop corn.

A lot of metal? That doesn't sound good at all. Was there any loss of performance? Did the engine feel like it was misfiring?

You should really try to localize the sound - get some friends or neighbors to try to pinpoint the location of the sound. If it's coming from inside the engine and it sound like a metal contacting metal sound, shut the engine off and don't drive it. I would get BMW roadside assistance to flatbed the car to a BMW dealer and get it looked at. Call the sales manager and tell him the X5 you purchased less than 30 days ago is no longer running. You need the car fixed and a loaner for whatever duration your X5 is down.

If you are low 1 quart of oil, the valves can get noisy. Is the noise gone? The issues with camshaft bearings, etc. was only with the first early models 4.8iS X5.....Haven't heard any realiability issues other than the typical BMW V8 engines of that era.....leaking oil and coolant in the higher mileages and of course the V8 engine's torque eating up the auto trannies......

Bonjour Xfivers !

I've been looking for some problems causing 'play' in the steering element.
Can someone explain in litteral comprehensive english the quoted words ?

I have had some clicking noise when steering... and after an oil change in the front diff, with unscrew/screw of the large alu plate, the click noise disppeared.
But with the engine stopped, if I turn the steering wheel, I can hear a noise...and from behind, I can feel it coming from the steering rack, especially on the left side tie rod.

Is that a known problem on a 2002 4.6is ?
