[pics] Passenger visor flatscreen and glove box DVD player

Here are some pics of the DVD system I installed over the weekend. My goals were as follows:
- Have something to play movies with on long drives to the cottage
- Non-instrusive aesthetically (easy on the eyes when not in use)
- Easy to access (switch discs)
- Maintain my BMW head unit at all costs (IPod, Bluetooth, etc)

Although the player supports the addition of backseat/headrest flatscreens (which are fairly inexpensive) I wanted to keep the system stealthed -- I have no insterest in using the system to impress people, I just want to play sports flicks and comedies (for passengers) and listen to live performances/concerts occasionally (on my own perhaps).

DIY costs range from $250 to $400 depending on player features and screen size (I chose the largest screen and a player with an integrated TV tuner).

If there's interest I can write up a tutorial however I would recommend most consider having this done professionally since it requires a lot of patience in addition to electronics and stereo/car-mod experience.

Parts List

I used the following:
- Power Acoustik PT-727MSV (now the 729 which is not as simple looking)
$170 Example reseller

- Audiovox AVD400T
You don't want anything longer than this one as the glove box needs to close. Shorter is better as you can avoid cuting/drilling cable feeds through the back of the glovebox to access the rear of the unit (as I was forced to do).
$180
Note: I wouldn't recommend this one for one other reason, when changing tracks the BMW HU senses a ground/short and "intelligently" changes from Aux to TR (I had to install a ground loop isolater to correct this.. which cost me $30 at BestBuy). The cheaper "Movies2go" products (also from audiovox) are smaller (easier to install) and switch tracks fine without "tripping" the BMW input sensor.
AudioVox homepage

A big tip I'd pass along to the installer:
There is an *autoswitching* power feed inside the visor already. This is pretty sweet because it means the LCD gets 12V of accessory/ignition power when the visor is down (and the ignition is forward or car is running) and no power when the visor is up.. I cut into it by mistake.. to avoid this set the LCD 1" to the left (more centered than mine) and you'll be fine. If the cutaway from the mirror cavity shows to right, cover it up by relocating the strap (the one on the left that holds papers, parking tickets, etc) to the right (use razor and glue).

josh256,
Great pics. I am in the middle of the same mode and took your advice. I want to use the autoswitching power feed but cannot find the +12V in the visor to tap off. I see the two ground black wires that complete the ground circuit but not the +12v. I have cut most of the foam away from the clear white plastic switch.
Any help would be apreciated.
Thanks
Kevin
