Angry Stop Slamming The Door!!!

Every time, no matter how soft or how hard someone closes the front passenger door, it sounds hollow. Not a rattle, but a hollow tinny sound. I've tapped on the outside of all the doors when they are closed and all but the front passenger door have a nice dampened tone. The f p door sounds empty. It is a 2002 that I bought February 2, original warranty has just run out so the dealer wants $$$ to go exploring. Have any of you heard of quality control issues like forgetting sound proofing? Just a thought. Still very annoying. Suggestions please.

How's your rubber seal around the door holding up?

My '01 has had "clunky" doors
since day one...some reviews
back then even spoke of it.

Heavy, but clunkyazz doors.

Stlr might be able to adjust it though
I had no luck with 2 tries.

And, it won't be free for your '02.

Good point, checked the weatherseal, looks fine not squashed or torn. Again with the door closed, if I tap on the sheet metal in the middle of the door from the outside, the door sounds hollow whereas all the other doors sound solid when I tap on them, also with them closed. Not a very BMW sound.

Agree with all the above points. Also check that the door is properly aligned as well as the alignment of the latch.

Both of my front doors are like this while the back doors are solid. I was wondering also but if they are not leaking what can you do!

Checked the latch, checked the hinges, checked alignment, all good. Closing the door or tapping the door skin in the middle of the door on the outside produce the same annoying ring, like my 1970 GMC p/u used to make. That I can accept, but this is a BMW and none of the other doors ring like that.

Take some bits of sponge or foam pipe insulation and wedge it between the mirror and the mirror casing and/or grasp the mirror neck (where it swivels) and try shutting the door.

Also, is there any difference window up and window down?

Ok just tried holding the mirror neck, no difference, however window down makes it worse. I've noticed a vibration / rattle in the driver's side when the window is down and I'm driving but we'll leave that to another post.

Because it is the only door that makes a Ping / higher tone than the expected solid thump when being closed AND if I tap on the outside of the door with it is closed, latched, window up, the door sounds hollow. I can actually see the middle of the skin vibrate briefly. Like hitting an empty oil drum.

There are no signs of body work prior to my ownership as well the history was clear so I am left to assume that the factory must have left something out.?.

There is a SIB for the window rattling when its down... Something about the cables that are supposed to hold it into place...

But this doesn't sound like it has anything to do with your predicament...

Maybe you could try taking apart the interior trim on the door. It can't be that hard, right?
