Want to really know how long oil lasts... check this out

I can't take credit for finding this, I snagged if from another forum, credit to the original poster.

Anyway these guys had oil tested ever 1000 miles till it failed. I wont spoil the ending, but it’s worth a read if you are into this stuff, if not it will be ultra boring .

Spoke with SA today, he says BMW says 1qt/900mis usage. You buy that? I guess that study bares it out.

I would agree with your SA's pitch, though oil consumption is all
over the map and from individual car to car...

I haven't kept meticulous records, but in my 3.0 '01, that 1 Qt per
~900 miles is about on for the first 40+K miles, though my consumption
has actually decreased to about 1 qt/1500 miles in the last 15K miles.

Great article, MrCleaner...thanks for that link. I BM'd it!

I have also noticed this. At 70K I burn about 1QT ever 1800-2000 miles. At 40K I was burning about double that.

Hmmmm i dunno if i should admit this here...but its actually been about 17,000 miles since my last oil change, i do a lot of freeway driving and my last change was in oct of 05, but i have topped off and never changed my filter, but now i am starting to feel a difference in my car, either time to top off again or finally change the filter and oil, btw, im at about 80500 miles already in a 02 3.0

Probably one of the most helful studies for oil use I've seen yet.
Gives a certain confidence back, esp on X5s'. Thx.
