Self-emptying ashtray?

I recently got one of those non-smoker's ashtrays to replace the stock ashtray, and I noticed something odd when I removed the stock piece...

Either the previous owner had some sort of aftermarket audio hardware in there or he never had to worry about emptying his ashtray. The hole is cut directly below the piece that you'd put your butt out with.

This ain't the way it's supposed to be, right? Anyone else have this on a stock ashtray?

I'm trying to figure this out just for curiosity's sake.

JV: I'm pretty sure that hole is/was for a lil'cable light that lit up the tray. If my fading memory serves, some guys on the ol'RF Bored did the non-smoke tray and even ran that cable light into their new tray.

This is from a few yrs ago "memory", Maybe the newer Xs don't have the light but the hole for it is still there?

We have self cleaning pick up truck beds, here in hillbillyheaven:
everyone tosses all their trash back in the truck bed and it self cleans as one rumbles down the 2 lanes at 60. WTF?!

Nope. I was at my local shop and one of those non-smoker's ashtrays happened to just by laying around unclaimed, so I snatched it.

Problem is my 'hood is pretty new and we don't have a regular carrier yet, just whoever draws the short straw at the post office carts our mail over here. It'll turn up eventually, I hope! Thanks again!

I appreciate the info from you guys, and if anyone needs an OEM ashtray, you can have it, free of charge.

I looked at my ashtray and it does not have a hole like the one shown. Sounds like the previous owner had some kind of mod done to the ashtray and beneath.

Maybe it's a hole to store those internal parasitic worms that X5Monkey showed us?

I looked at "mine" too: it has a hole, though no light. The cigar lighter button perimeter does light up, however.

We gotta get a fooking life, Lmao!

Let me clarify, the receptacle for the ashtray has the hole in it as pictured, the ashtray DOES NOT.

His previous owner did make a hole in the ash tray as shown.
