4.4 six speed auto tranny fix
After totalling my '05 3.0, I took posession of the replacement, a 4.4 with auto on July 19. Just short of 2,000 miles on 'er right now.
I was concerned about the complaints I've seen here about the tranny hesitating on accelerating from a stop, but mine did not do it at all. However, what I did have was early upshifting and downshifting from 1st thru 4th, especially in city traffic; and continuous hunting for the right gear on uphill grades. For example, at a steady 55-60 mph with no change in accel input, the d--- thing would shift back and forth from 4th to 5th every 10-15 seconds. The shifts were smooth and you could not feel them, but noticeable on the tach. Obviously, it should not have been doing that, and I was concerned with tranny longevity. My dealer is Towne BMW, here just a mile or so from my house, and they have been top notch in every aspect. So, I took 'er in yesterday for re-programming. They used v. 23, which I understand is the latest version, and WOW, what a difference. It now shifts like a $60k car should, and I am entirely satisfied. My purpose here is simply to give anyone with similar issues a heads-up, and suggest to your dealer they use v. 23. It works. BTW, this thing is a dandy car, and I'm satisfied with it in every respect. Glad I got an '06 instead of waiting for the longer '07.
