cold start noise on 02 3.0i

Whenever I start my car after it has been ssitting for 2 hours or more, I hear a whirling type noise. I first suspected it dealt with the belts. I took it to my bmw dealer and they let it sit overenight and started it up the following morning but they simply stated that they didn't hear anything different. The sound btw is somewhat like a very light whirling/ squeeling. So has anyone ever had this problem on their 3.0s? Please let me know what the problem is so I can address my bmw dealer about this. I will try to get a sound clip of this if possible.

During extreme cold, 10deg or below, my x5 will make a nasty noise for about 1 second right at start up, might be belts slipping or somthing, but it sounds horrible. But again this has only happened when its been very cold outside and the car is cold.

Mine was the alternator making the noise... I had to leave it two nights overnight for them to diagnoise the problem. And my dumb butt took the X3 as the loaner...

Jay,
My '01 3.0 had and, still has cold start "noise"...
Last fall before the Warr/ExtMaint ran out, I bugged the
local lowtech Stlr, and they diagnosed a bad water pump.
It was R&R'd under warr. and sounds a little better, but
still exhibits a "fan noise" upon start up and for the first
minute or so. (Mine's a 5 spd manual.)

I questioned them at the time of repair as to why they did
not replace all the belts, but they said their "diagnosis" did
not discern that belts were a prob. WTF?! I woulda been glad
to even pay for the belt replacement as long as they were in
there with pulleys off, water pump out, etc. Alas, to no avail...

I have not gotten around to having belts replaced, (no local
privateer), and I am not going back to Fletcher BMW unless
I have to.

That's my story: lil'help, but I empathize. I suspect water pump
and/or a belt job will cure your ills.

Benathon, when the alternator made noise, how long did the doise last after the start up. I noticed that after about 4-5 mins or when the car is already moving it seems to go away.

UPDATE

I left the car at my bmw dealer for 4 days and they told me they didnt hear anything wrong. I also noticed that the whirling noise/ sqeeling is more noticeable when put into drive. Any suggestons on what to do before the warranty ends in 2 months? Maybe tell them to check again as the noise is louder? Please help this noise is annoying.

It goes away in about a minute. Did you have them check the belts too? I left my car for a few days to make sure they find the problem.

You might also want to leave the car there and get up early one cold day when its there and start it with them. What is a noise to you might be common for them, you know?

I had to take the guys for a few rides with my rattles that I ended up fixing myself.

Well not necessarily a cold day but I mean starting the x after its been sitting overnight. This happens when it is both cold outside and hot outside....Does anyone know about the belt tensioner problem?
