That's lower than what I get on my pre-Valvetronic '02 4.4i. I typically drive in L.A. stop and go traffic and my miles left reading is usually around 370 at fill up.

You have to understand how we drive here in SF. You go one block up a hill, then stop at the stop sign, go another two blocks up hill, stop at a red light. Kills your gas mileage and your brakes. So I wouldn't use this as representative of what you will get unless you live in SF

I will be using the X5 in Jersey, no hills in Jersey , so that's not a problem.

Be careful comparing two fuel consumption figures from a dyno, and expecting the same in the real world. It is possible, but not likely.

The 4.4 is heavier than the 3.0, and that alone will have a slight negative impact on mileage, as will the larger tires. The dyno figures use a predetermined acceleration rate for the stop-go cycle, so the 4.4 isn't working hard at all. Under those circumstances, ie producing the same hp, the increased efficiency of the valvetronic intake overcomes the increased friction of the V8, giving the 4.4 a slight edge.

All that means that you can theoretically get the same mileage with the 4.4; in the real world, however, many 4.4 owners make occasional (or frequent) use of the power available to them. Under those circumstances, the mileage will drop for the 4.4, more so than for the 3.0. Driving habits are the single biggest variable, which is why you will see wildly varying mileage figures quoted for the same vehicles.

Get what you want, they both use a fair bit of fuel, and there isn't that much difference with the two models.

San Franciscans get the double whammy - crappy gas mileage because of the terrain and a premium on fuel prices. - just because it's San Francisco. We Angelenos feel really have a lot of sympathy for the fine residents of the City.

BTW - Chip (320 miles remaining) shows his residence as 08820 which to my knowledge is Jersey which is not hilly like SF. Me thinks Chip likes to mash the go pedal which was fine with me - Bimmers were intended to be driven hard.

My '01 4.4 holds just under 25 gallons...I get anywhere from 325 to 400 miles per tank.
