Oil residue on bottom of oil pan

On the bottom of my X5, there seems to be some old oil around the bolts og the oil pan. The oil seems to be coming from a covered area that can be opened. Do you think this was probably started from an oil mess when draining the oil?

Most likely. Clean up the oil. If you see residue again before you change the oil next, you have a leak. Is the residue around the perimeter of the oil pan, all over the perimeter?

The oil is pretty much all around the perimeter and stops at the edge of the pan where the bolts are located and where the jack loaction is.
