Rotor Removal (FYI)

I used the info posted in the DIY to change the brakes and rotors and thought it was great. I found that remval of the rotors was a little tough, instead of banging on the rotors. I used a 6" gear puller, and they pop right off.

Just something to try for those who are thinking about the DIY. Hope this helps, smarter not harder.

An old mechanic's trick you can use as well: buy an air chisel with a hammer attachment. If you work around the hub with 1-2 second bursts, the rotor will separate without hammer damage.

I just jack up the rotor from the bottom edge of the rotor, also taps on the rotor. It's got off easy for me.

problem with using a gear puller is that it has to push on something... usually the gear pullers push down the center and that usually is the middle of the hub where the dust cap covers the wheel bearings...

typically you don't really want to do that....

yep, thats the way shops do it instead of grabbing a rubber mallet.. save energy and is much much much faster...

i didn't write about that in my article because i wanted to use a set of tools that almost any home diy tool set should have... (sure i cheated and used air tools and a lift but the procedures could be done with typical hand tools in any basic mechanics set)

Work with me bro, you can put just about anything over the center of the hub.

just replaced the rear rotors at 88k miles. I used a punch around the center of the rotor when it meets the hub. my air chisel would have been my backup. anti-seize the hub before installing the new rotor.

Kool, just trying to help those of us who don't have air tools. The gear puller is 13-20 bucks from your local auto parts shop.
