Check rear lamp question

I got the check rear lamp warning this morning, but only appeared for about 5 minutes and then disappeared (I have the older style OBC, so the warning indicator have a picture of the car along with appropriate lamp-out indicators). I drove the car a few more times after that, but no more indicator coming on...so I thought it was just an intermittent problem. But when I got home this evening, I looked at the rear lamp and sure enough, it was out. My question is that should the indicator be on all the time until I fix the problem? Or would it only come on once and disappeared?

BTW...the contacts on that bulb holder was a bit corroded (just as everyone had described it on this forum), but it wasn't from moisture or anything. It looks more like it was caused by high current arcing due to the poorly conductive contacts. For now, I just cleaned out the contacts and bend them back out a bit with a plier (too lazy to drive to the dealer for a new holder) and that seems to work.
