Question about Gasoline

Hi All,

I've had my 2001 X5 for a couple of months now and found this forum recently. Lots of problems with battery, final stage resistor, etc. but things seem to have settled down now.

I heard from someone that Amoco/BP gasoline is bad for BMWs so I was wondering if any of you who are more experienced with BMWs have a preference on the type of gas you regularly use.

I use Shell gasoline, 91 octane.

Question/topic has been debated and beaten
to a pulp, imo...do a search: pages of opins
and posts. I would put any name brand gas
in my X...most prefer 91 oct.; I've run 89 and,
even 87, on trips where the tank is consumed
in half a day. 91 is rec'd, brand is of little
consequence.

Your exp with final stage resistor is common and
as your X is an '01, the batt. is gonzo or going.

I use Shell and look for other Toptier retailers if I can't find a Shell station...

On the X5 I really can't tell any difference but on the M5 when I get gas from some other station I feel a very subtle roughness in idle and acceleration which is why I try to stick with Shell. YMMV

I've always used Citgo or Sunoco 93 octane in all my cars and have never had any problems.

I never buy Citgo, because I have no desire to send money to the government of Argentina (which owns Citgo).

It's either ExxonMobil, or a Top Tier retailer such as Chevron or Shell. If I'm lucky I can find a place that doesnt serve up 10% corn oil. I swear it lowers my MPG.

Check out MD's post about corn oil ruining marine engines. It's also not unheard of to do damage to any engine.

Recently purchased 02' 3.0 and used the lower grades with bad experiences. Now I'm using Shell and Chevron 91 and I notice a big difference in performance compared to when I used the lower grades.
