2001 3.0 5spd is as fast as 4.4 V8...

sorry if repost, but last week I had a chance to run 50-110 mph with 4.4L V8 model. He gained maybe an inch or two on me, but overall it looked even. My mods so far: K&N filter and factory sunroof delete.. Both of us were on 19inch wheels and with passenger.

Would it of been that close if you were driving the 4.4?

Hard to believe, but cars are cars...

I doubt it was due to the lack of sunroof or,
the K&N filter.

I like my 3.0 manual a lot...I would not bet a
freakin nickel it could get past a V8, but hey.

By no means I said it could get past a V8. However, my X5 with basic package should be atleast 100 lbs lighter than Auto 3.0 or atleast 200 lighter than fully packaged 4.4L it was. That is equal to about 15-17hp power to weight advantage on my side. I count also 5-7 hp for the K&N. In sum we have about 250 hp for the weight of V8 car. My gearing is very low with top speed 125 mph in 5th with much lesser power losses as in auto tranny (say another 10 hp disadvantage of the V8 car) I also use only 94 octaine and keep car in tip top shape.
I can not attest for sure what the other driver was doing as we never talked, but judging from his behaviour and the fact that we did it twice, I assume he was trying his best. He also took a dangerous turn in hopes to loose me there. So, I think the race was close to 100% potential of both given cars.

Your K&N is not likely worth any horsepower. The 94 octane fuel is similarly a non-factor, unless he was using 87. The gearing is different between the two vehicles, so it is hard to do a direct comparison over a specific speed range. If you had kept going above the 110 mph (not suggesting you should) you would likely have seen the effect of his greater hp.
