Reverse gear triggers the PDC on; otherwise its manual. The car does not know if you are driving slow in traffic jam or parking.

If I pull in close to a wall or vehicle the front PDC starts chirping without a prompt.

it should only do that if you just took the X out of reverse. I beleive it stays on for a minute or so before it turns it's self off.

If I put the X into reverse and the back into drive it will stay on till it reaches 10 mph I think

You're right. For my 2005, although it states on Page 93 of the manual that it should turn off when shifting out of Reverse: http://www.bmwmotorsports.org/pdf/BM...20-%202005.pdf It actually takes speed and/or distance to turn off...same as when you manually activate. Regardless, it does turn off.

I agree with all posts about reverse being the trigger, then forward speed/distance turning it off.
You can manually turn the PDC on when moving forward into a parking spot, once you've slowed to less than about 10 mph. |
