Question Michelin 4x4 Diamaris 255/55VR18

Hello All:
Time for me to change my 2002 4.4i Tires. Tiresavings.com is running a special on Michelin 4x4 Diamaris 255/55VR18 tires. $189. Pretty sweet considering I haven't seen anywhere else that's less than $240. However the question is what the hell is the "V" in the middle of that means? I went over the michelin site and saw some tire comparison (link below) OEM tires is at 255/55R18. But when I select tires for my models, VR18 comes up also, can I install it? what's the difference? Can somebody help please? Thank You!!

I think the V relates to the speed rating, but I'm a just a girl, what do I know . The tires are great. I've had them on since May and dread putting on my winter set up. Good choice!

Appreciate the help on that! you might be a girl but you sure know more about tires than I(a guy) do! So V is the same then? I should still be able to install it?

I see you're in Indy - You're not going to put the Diamaris on for the winter are you? They are NOT winter tires.

I have the Michelins that came with the X for winter use. Don't know what the name is. Try doing a search for all season tires or snow tires if you plan on changing tires for the seasons.

Good luck and Welcome to the World!

pengbsam,
cmyx5go was right on: that "V" is a "speed rating" for that specific tire.

Speed rating is essentially a grade given to a tire that says that tire
is rated to "be able to operate at speeds up to and, briefly above" that
rating for "sustained" periods. The orig 1991 law/rule was less expanded,
but you get the idea. The V rating is "good for" 149 mph.

Most of the 18 rubber in X5 sizes, is of the H speed rating, ie 130 mph.

Since your X will never get to 149, even off a cliff, that V rating is academic
vis a vis the "rating". What V rated tires do offer, usually, is greater grip
and often, much faster wear and, less tire life.

If it's for summer use or, you don't plan on seeing snow in Indy this winter, it
may be a good tire/value for you; otoh, it will not serve you well in any snow,
ice or cold weather situ, as compared to a winter tire or even, an H rated std
or "all season" tire..."all season" is a misnomer, imo, as they are
really summer, fall, rain tires as opposed to winter tires.

Hope this helps...I realize the oem Michey, H rated 18" tire is pricey, but
it is a helluva tire.

I just replaced all four of my tires last week. I stayed with the OEM tire from Michellin - MVV4 Plus (255/55-18). I picked them up from tirerack for $187 a piece. I never had traction problems in NY's winters, especially the 26in snow storm last winter. I drove fine on the roads after being some what plowed and even in much deeper snow on the side streets. Overall it's a good tire and I was happy with the thread life. 4 yrs old at 40K miles with 6/32nds up front remaining and 8/32nds in the rears. I had a blow out which was caused (see link below) by a puncture otherwise I would have gotten a little more mileage but then decided just replace them now and go another 4 years. Just my 2 cents.
