Hey thanks, this explains most of the questions I had but at the same time brought up more questions! Such as, what is the application for auxilary ventilation or residual heat?
Anyone use this; in what situations?

UK cooling down

19 deg C at this time of year. Need to crank it up to around 22 in the winter, back to 17 or so in summer. I also find the e46 is about 2 deg less than the X, and that rotary air vent thing can have a strong effect.
The X5 does well considering it's a bit of a greenhouse, esp with the pan roof

Auxiliary ventilation is for when you leave your car in the morning and have watched the weather and know that it will be warm. You set the aux vent feature to about 30 minutes to an hour before you plan on returning to your X and it will circulate the air through to cabin so that you don't have to return to a really hot cabin.

The residual heat is used when you shut off the X after it is fully warmed up. You press that button and it will give you heat without the X's engine running. It the keys are out of the ignition it will automatically sent the heat to the defrost vents, but it the key is in the auxiliary position you can select when the heat does.

Anyone know that the Direct Mode on the Auxiliary Ventilation does?
