Mounting of toll transponders - windshield or license plate frame?

I have a windshield mounted toll transponder and was considering getting a front license plate mounted unit instead, however the company tells me that such a unit is not compatible with the car. Anyone have one and how did you get it?

I have one. I didn't have any issue getting it, just asked for it. The only issue is in the winter. If it's snowing while you are driving and the snow accumulates, the reader can't read the bar code.

Did you have the option of the windshield mounted unit? I was told that every car has one option only; not sure why.

I have mine on the windshield, up to the right hand side of where the rear-view mirror mounts. Out of my line of sight, and works every time.

Yes. Here in NY/NJ you can get either one.

ive had one for the last 5 years for my license plate. it used to be only for commercial use. they have a list on their website that tells you which cars need it because of special windshields. Here is a sample list.

you can make the argument that, you have a climate comfort infrared windscreen, which blocks the transmitter. so you'll need the license plate tag.
