Whistle transmission & engine longevity questions...

Hey Everyone-

So my X5 is now up to nearly 106,000 miles and I was just wondering about the longevity of:

(1) transmisison

(2) the engine

(2a) should I stop pushing it over a certain RPM at this point in its life?

I've owned the car since 37K miles and have alwyas driven it "pretty spiritedly" at least in terms of accerlation. Example, I hardly EVER get onto the freeway without maxing out at least one or two of the gears (usually 1st and 2nd, if not 2nd and nearly 3rd).

That said, I've always performed timely maintenance, oil changes, etc.

Just wondering what I should be preparing for, e.g., how long will the engine actually last, the gearbox, etc....

Thanks!

BMW engines should last pretty much forever. Automatics usually last 100k miles, give a take a few thousand. Doing an ATF flush may or may not prolong its life. Same goes for babying versus beating the transmission. It's really a mystery, but if you're on your first automatic after 110k miles, consider yourself on borrowed time.

Hi,

My 02 is at 175K kilometers, which is a lot more than what you are talking about. It still drives like new

I was worried about it when I first bought my car with such high mileage, but to be honest with you I dont think its a problem and I try not to think about it until something breaks.

You probably live in the U.S where you guys have better roads and freeways anyway so I wouldn't lose much sleep over it. Enjoy your car for the time being

My auto tranny lasted till 137K......just save up about $6-7K to replace it or trade it in before it dies.
