problems with engine management

Hi Guys,

excellent site. I am a new member and have a 2001 x5 4.4i sports pack. I was wondering if anyone has had problems with an orange engine warning light which means "deterioration of engine emmision". The engine has become quite hesitant and seems to cut out when you put your foot flat on the accelerator. Someone did say that it could be the air flow meter? Any help would be appreciated as i took it to my local service advisor and the diagnostic tool could not really tell him anything, and his next step is to check various sensors etc. He was able to turn off the warning light, but 5 minures later it was back on.

thanks
Frank
