Changing license plate bulb?

yeeep those are the ones i got excactly same shape and everything and i rememberr the size of the LED bulbs being 6...something something...

Well I replaced the bulb and still the light is not working. I did notice a little bit of corrosion around the wires, don't know if that's the culprit.

Anyone know how to reset the message on the ODO? Maybe that might fix it?

Hi, my X5 have same problem. The left hand bulb of license plate have been broken on last week, then I change a new bulb by myself and found it still not working. I back to BMW repair center, they said the PCB of the "trunk lid grip" have been damage but they don't why. They said I need to replace whole "trunk lid grip" to fix the problem and it cost around $195.00. IT IS VERY EXPENSIVE FOR REPLACE A BULB.

I am in the midst of the dreaded license plate bulb issue. I took the rear grip assembly off. I noticed the plug from the truck to the light/grip assy is very corrosive. The black plastic pieces pop off behind each light also. The metal there is also corrosive.

I wil be removing the plastic lower trunk piece to determine where the truck wires go and whether there is a wire harness to replace to have a new plug.

If all else fails, I am going to sand/solder the light connections, remove the corroded plug from the truck and the grip assy, then sloder the wires together with out that stupd plastic wire plug.

No way I am shelling out $350.00 to fix a license plate bulb. unless of course, the above does not work.

Yeah I believe it's just the corrosion that was keeping the bulb from working. My problem was resolved by using an electric terminal cleaner spray. I then had the car sit for a few days and I wiped the residue off and it finally worked.

FYI All,

I was able to remove the male & female sides of the 4-wire plug for the license plate bulb/grip and connect it directly to the wires from the trunk. Used solder, heat shrink, and applied some silicone around each opening to seal the trunk, then reinstalled.

Both lights work great now and amazingly the trunk grip microswitch started working. I thought that was non-functional a long time ago. Apparently it was the corrosion in the 4-wire plug.

All in all, it cost a few bucks for some electrical stuff. Saved ~ $250.00.
