Anyone done a recent X5 nav retrofit??

I have an 06 X5 that I should have bought with nav.
Has anyone done a retrofit recently?
I have read a couple of places that the retrofit wiring harness is no longer available...or not suitable. Can anyone say for sure if this is true, or know where I can get a wiring harness? I have talked to my local dealer, and Creveir, but neither seemed overly interested in helping.

I think the general consensus is that it is a much larger job than is reasonable to do. The vehicle will never be as tight and rattle-free again. Trade it if it is that important. Otherwise, invest in an aftermarket GPS, and/or rear-seat DVD monitors. Quite a few posts if you do a search.

I suggest the stock NAV retrofit as posed to any a/market. A.market ruins the entire look of the car. Especially if its a new car, dont mess with it. Although exp, do the factory nav

My dealer told me that they have tried to retro nav systems in X5's and won't attempt it anymore. This is primary due to wire harness issues.

The retrofit nav would be the best looking, however it seems to be a hassle to have it installed. I would just get an after market nav.

I have done the NAV retrofit in my X5 and 540, as well as two other friend's cars. While it wasn't in an /06 model, there is nothing different about the install. First off, the dealer is the wrong place to get any info on this. They will tell you it is not possible. I am not at all fond of any aftermarket units that you will probably have to mount on the dash or on a goose neck. Nothing beats the clean look of the factory NAV and you open up several other options like Sirius radio with on screen display, TV, DVD, Backup Cam, etc. you can buy all the parts new for $3500-$4000 if you're willing to spend that. You need much more than just a wiring harness. Otherwise look for some used deals. If you can install car stereos etc. you can do the NAV retrofit. If that's a bit of a challenge, then I suggest you find someone that has done it.Unfortunately I'm in Canada!

I think Martin Bishop @ bimmernav.com may have an X5 nav wiring harness available.

Agree with King and with Driver X5 - can be done, OEM is best looking, with capability for most add on functionality like back-up cam etc. However, looks like one heck of a project especially if you are not very familiar with stereo installation like endeavours. Plus, $$$$$$ for a retrofit.

IMO, if its just the nav you need/want buy an aftermarket like the nuvi or tomtom. For ~$500 or less depending on the bells and whistles you want, you will have a nav that is far superior than BMW's. My GF's M3 has the BMW Nav, its dated and I hate it. I have the nuvi, I rarely need the nav, once a month at most, so it spends 90% of the time in the glovebox. Suits my needs just fine.

I want the heads up display nav that is is in the new X5 with the tech package - a friend has it in a 650. Now that is schweeet!!!

To each their own .......

If you are serious about doing the retrofit and are willing to spend 3 to 4 G's, let me know and I can get you the wiring harness and all the parts you need. If you already have the other parts and just need help with the install, I would be glad to help too...

FYI. There's a seller on eBay who has the Nav retrofit kit listed for $3,500. It includes the infamous wiring harness. Check it out.
