Need help locating this part on the X
the part is #15 My mechanic thinks that this is the part causing sputtering at high revs. What do ya think? |

What are all of your symptoms? That would cause the same code as the gas cap being loose. I don't think it will cause a sputter at any RPM.

The car seems to have normal operation at low acceleration, it can even go to higher revs with being easy on the gas. But if I step on the acc. it does not accelerate, it seems to stay at that rpm wanting to accelerate but then stutters and stays at the rpm where it started.

What exact code was triggered?
If I'm not mistaken, the leak evaporative pump is the DMTL pump which pressurizes the fuel tank allowing a leakage check to be performed. Check out page 4 of 28 of the following document: http://www.unofficialbmw.com/images/...lectronic3.pdf Although this document is specific to the E46 M3, the DTML pump is the same part for most BMW's. Because this pump is directly controlled by the ECM, the OBDII codes relating to the pump are accurate. Either the fittings to the pump are faulty or the pump itself is faulty, but the problem is definitely pump related. Any examination will determine specifically what the issue is. If you've tightened the gas cap and reset the codes, only to have the same code appear, it's not the cap. |

My mechanic said it was the Lamda Probe/sensor his words exactly was Somda Lamda. Since I'm in Italy, technical language is sometimes very hard for me, an American. Maybe some Italian on board can help with this. Is it the probe or sensor?? He explained this is a sensor that watches the exact mixture of O2 and Co2 from the exhaust before the catalic converter to help the engine run clean.

The "Somda Lamda" is a you O2 sensor (Italian accsent applied).
How many miles do you have on her, which engine? I would suspect fuel rail pressure. You should have 50 psi in the fuel rail @ idle. It should not wander from there very far under all operating conditions. It could also be an intake air leak. Check all your hoses and the air intake boot. The fast accel studder you describe sounds like fuel starvation. Two rules of thumb for trouble shooting. 1. Easiest part to check first, working towards the hardest part. If no results, see #2. 2. least expensive part to replace second, working twards the most expensive. Unfourtunatly, if is not their money, sometimes Mechanics reverse the two.

OK, SUPERSTEVE. I have 120K not miles Kilometers so about 72K miles. I just replaced the 2 oil vent hoses in the back of the engine. She is a Oct 2000 vehicle 4.4i (rare in Italy) don't really trust many mechanics to do the work. I must be honest, when I replaced the 2 hoses I thought I had to undo the U shaped aluminum tube on the top of the engine. I just loosened the bolts and the tube, didnt remove it though, but did wiggle it loose a bit. After I replaced the hoses I managed to put the aluminum tube back in place. This problem did exist before I replaced the 2 oil vent hoses. I dont have a diagnosis tool to test the fuel pressure.
What hoses should I check? Where is the air intake boot? Is that where the air filter for the engine is? |
