How do I wire my Hitch

I got my Hitch mounted to my 2001 X5 4.4i through U-Haul. The dealer here said, the wiring has to be done at BMW service center. I wanted to give it a try to do the wiring myself. Can anybody please suggest how I could go about wiring for the trailer. Appreciate your help.

I read through the article, and they have nothing specific on the wiring instruction, like the type of harness & on where would I connect the harness to in the car. Any of you have done this yourself, any pictures please?

When you buy the OEM trailer hitch light module it will come with the installation instructions that includes diagrams.

hmmm, U-Haul installed the wiring for me with no hesitation. Took about 10 minutes to splice in the wires.

Apparently, U-Haul was hesitant to put mine in. Can you show me the wiring harness I will need to purchase. From researching, I figured out, I will have to plug it into the spare wheel well. But then not sure, on what kind of Harness it would be. Any body have a link to online part?

Digitron - the instructions you are reading are for the BMW factory wiring harness. That is what is going to cost you $199. However, it appears you are looking to go the aftermarket route which many people will advise you not to do. I DO have an aftermarket harness that has worked very well for me. I bought it at Advance Auto and it has both a 7-pin round connection and a 4-pin flat connection. All the wires are spliced into the factory wiring going to the taillights. This wiring harness is about $20-30.

These pics will give you some idea of the U-Haul wiring harness. You can easily install yourself if you can identify the correct wires to tap into. 3+ years and no problems so far.

You guys rock! Thank you very much for the information. I very much appreciate it. I will get the wiring harness from U-Haul & tap it into the existing wiring module.

I purchased a hitch that was recommended by one of these x5 forums and it arrived today. I was under the impression there were some extra brackets. It was from Curt manufacturing but Dalan was teh link i ordered from. Now about the wiring issue. Can you share withme any details you ran into with this effort? Much thanks [email protected]
