anyone tow a wakeboat with their X

I am about to get a new wakeboat, I am looking at the Malibu lsv 23 foot boat. it weighs 3900# without trailer and not loaded, so probably more like 5500# plus gear. My neighbor doesnt think I will be able to tow it. I have seen all thepics etc on here about towing, but very few pics of people towing wakeboar boats, or other boats. anyone have any good pics and posts about towing their boat? size weight, and how good it tows. thanks.

by the way krunk, what kinda setup do you have for towing and what type of terrain do you tow, hills flat, how far. do you have weight distribution? obviously you have trailer brakes. let me know man thanks. also is that the only vehicle you tow with or jsut sometimes?

just jokin on the comment above.

I use the standard oem trailer hitch. I live in Minneapolis so terrain is mostly flat. I only tow the big boat about 30-50 miles a year, but tow many other things ranging from a 4500 pound snowmobile trailer to a 1500 pound utility trailer.
I really have no problems with towing anyhting. We now tow the big boat with my dads 4.4 which works considerably better.
Your 4.8 should have no problems.

Also, ive never had any problems with braking, even with the snowmobile trailer that has no brakes.
Only problem is going too fast on the highway and the trailer starts to swing. So I keep it under 75 with most trailers, 60 with the boat.
Let me know if you have any other questions buschy.
Krunk

I have a 2001 3.0 X5 with the OEM hitch and also a Tekonsha Prodigy brake controller. My boat is a 17' Four Winns ski boat around 3,300 lbs with all the gear. I have to tow up 2 steep grades to the lake but it does it like a champ and is very stable and controlled. The boat trailer has electric brakes. I added the electric brakes when I had my 4Runner (too many times I warped the rotors) and have since kept that setup. I won't win any races while towing but I'm very happy with the performance. We've loaded up 5 people in the X5 and all our gear and it's smooth sailing.

Get the OEM hitch and use the brake controller instructions on this site. The tekonsha prodigy is an enertia type and a high quality product.

Good luck!

I also have an '01 3.0 and used to tow a 22.5 Centurion Air Warrior with it with no problems whatsoever. With the size boat you are looking at, the trailer should have surge brakes on it which will help alot.

See pic below

This happened when I was trying to hook the boat up to my truck (which is now sold) by myself. I got the hitch lined up and thought I had put the truck in PARK, however, it was in REVERSE. As soon as I let off the brake, the truck lurched back, slammed into the tongue of the trailer, and pushed the boat over the end of the driveway and into the woods. Believe it or not the boat came to a stop without hitting a single tree!!! However, my truck was not 4-wheel drive and it had performance tires on, so there was no way I was going to be able to pull it out of the woods. I backed the X down there, got it hooked up, and pulled it right out without spinning a single tire!!! Hence the wife got a new car, I sold the truck, and I am now driving the X!!!
