After driving the pepper s for 3 years ,(lease ended last month) here are my thoughts on the subject. The cayenne was almost trouble free, only 1 unscheduled visit over 45k. The regular maitenance is way up there in $$$$ compared with BMW's $0. Brakes $1650.00, 5 sets of tires (one set/12k) at $1500.00 a set (19'') oil changes ,ect... The cayenne is a great suv at high speed, but not so much at lower digits. It had too much body roll and just felt too heavy, unless you floored it and even then the lag between 1500 and 3000 rpm was so bad that sometimes it gave me the impression that it was about to stall. I never did warm up to the look of the pepper ,but that is purely subjective. Overall, I think BMW'S transmissions, engines, and handling are more refined than the porsche. At least in this segment. I did enjoy my 3 years with it ,but not enough to do it again. IMO the x5 is the better choice and that is what i will be driving come the new year.

I was in a similar situation when looking for a SUV, it was either a Cayenne Turbo or a 4.8is. The Cayenne just didn't impress me handling wise (which is what is important to me, don't really car about the difference in power). The Cayenne S looses to the X5 on a track, but ultimately its what appeals to you most b/c they are both very well engineered
