Do you have a button with an ! on the lower part of the dash next to where DSC, HDC, heated seats, etc.. buttons are located? That should be the buttton for the Flat Tire monitor.

However, I believe until 2006, BMW used a passive monitor which detects a flat tire based on tire rotation speed.

No, you don't need them. The monitors work off of the ABS sensors and don't directly measure pressure. They measure the difference in rotation when the vehicle is going straight. A tire with low pressure will rotate faster.

You sure you don't have it? It's the button on the far right. I have an '04 and have it.

how do i know if my x5 (2004) has tire pressure sensor?

Take the air out of one tire, drive around and see if you get a warning light

Sorry John - couldn't resist.

That's how FTM (Flat Tire Monitor) works. TPM (Tire Pressure Monitor) actually monitors the pressure in each tire, independently of each other.
